How To Stop Puppy Biting

You can learn to train dogs by watching the behavior of wild canids.  Canids are wolves, foxes and wild dogs.

The mother dog and the pack shape the behavior of  the pup by positively and negatively reinforcing the pup’s behavior. You can mimic this behavior to train your puppy to stop biting too.

Is your puppy getting a little too agressive and biting a bit too much.  A little growl and scolding from the mother dog will put puppy in his place and get him to stop nipping so much for a short time.  Mother dog will gladly repeat the reprimand as often as needed and the pup learns not to mess with mom.

How do you act like a mother dog and get your puppy to stop using your hand as a pacifier?

  • Start encouraging positive behavior early – don’t think it’s cute to let your puppy bite you or things can get worse or even dangerous.
  • Redirect the biting to an appropriate toy or bone.
  • Pretend your puppy really hurt you by yelping like an injured dog.  Your puppy will notice and back off.
  • Startle or distract your dog with a noisy object like a can filled with pebbles. Use a sharp “No” at the same time.

Stay consistent with your methods and your cute little puppy will learn what he’s supposed to chew on and what is off limits. That’s how to stop a puppy biting before you end up with a biting problem dog.
